Making room for the unfinished
On why unfinished work needs time, distance and the freedom to change.

An unfinished object holds more than what is missing. It holds decisions that have not yet settled: a proportion that feels almost right, a junction that asks for another solution, a surface whose character changes under a different light. To finish too quickly can mean closing these questions before they have done their work.
Within Unquiet Form, the unfinished has a place in the process. A piece can remain open while the relationship between its parts becomes clearer. This does not make every delay useful. It means that completion is judged through the object, as well as through the calendar.
Distance changes the reading
Working closely on a detail can make the whole difficult to see. A curve becomes the centre of attention. A connection occupies every decision around it. Stepping away allows the object to be encountered again at another scale: first as a presence, then as a set of relationships, and only afterwards as individual details.
That return may confirm an earlier choice. It may also reveal that a technically resolved element feels wrong in the composition. The value of distance lies in making this distinction possible.
Revision belongs to the work
A drawing gives an idea a first structure. Material introduces another conversation. Thickness, weight, resistance and the way light meets a surface can redirect a form that seemed complete on paper. Revision is the point at which those observations become decisions.
For a one-of-one object, each decision belongs to that particular piece. There is room to respond to what is actually taking shape, without requiring the outcome to become a repeatable model.
Allowing an ending
Keeping a work open is not a commitment to endless change. An object also needs an ending: a point at which further adjustment no longer gives it greater clarity. Recognising that point asks for the same attention as recognising what still needs work.
Making room for the unfinished means protecting the possibility of that clarity. The pause, the return and the final decision all leave their trace in the piece.
